Google Ads Call Conversion Tracking With WhatConverts: The Setup, Step by Step

Google Ads call conversion tracking only counts the calls Google can see, and on one account we manage, Google’s call log caught 15 of 27 ad calls one summer. WhatConverts closes that gap by sending every call and form your team marks quotable back to Google Ads, tied to the ad that started it.

Below is the setup screen by screen, which leads to send, how to test it and the five places phone call conversion tracking leaks. The numbers come from Google Ads accounts we manage, unnamed.

What Does Google Ads Call Conversion Tracking Miss on Its Own?

Every call Google can’t tie to an ad click, and on one account we manage that was close to half of them.

On its own, Google can track phone call conversions two ways: someone calls the Google forwarding number on your call asset, or calls from your website, where Google’s tag has to catch the forwarded number or the click to call. Calls that skip Google’s number, people who saw the ad and dialed later, and visitors who typed the number on your mobile site into their phone never show up. Smart bidding never learns from them.

In July and August 2026, Google’s call log on that account held 15 calls. Our call tracking logged 27 on the same ad number, and in September it was 2 against 6. That’s the gap Google Ads call conversion tracking leaves open, and it’s the gap this setup closes.

There’s an opposite problem too: Google counting calls that aren’t leads at all. That one’s covered in What Counts as a Qualified Call?

What Does the WhatConverts Google Ads Integration Send?

It sends the leads you choose back to Google Ads as conversions, matched either to the ad click or to the ad call that started them.

TypeMatched byCovers
Click conversionThe GCLID, the Google click ID on the visitForms and website calls from an ad click
Call conversionThe call’s time and caller IDCalls directly from the ad’s call asset
Enhanced conversionThe lead’s phone or email, hashedA second chance to match when the click ID is missing

Most setups get this wrong. A click conversion and a call conversion aren’t duplicates. They’re two halves of one signal, and each lead goes as one or the other, never both.

The call half usually carries the weight. On the account above, 14 of 18 qualified Google Ads leads from July to September were phone call conversions placed straight from the ad.

The connection form asks you to name both halves up front, as the Lead Conversion Name and the Call Extension Conversion Name (call extension is Google’s old name for a call asset, and it also covers call-only ads). We use “WhatConverts Qualified Leads” for clicks and “WhatConverts Call Conversion” for calls, on every account we run.

What Do You Need Before You Connect It?

Five things, and the integration fails quietly if any one of them is missing.

  1. Admin access to the Google Ads account, through the login that will own the connection. If the login doesn’t match the account, uploads fail with a permission error.
  2. Auto-tagging on. It’s a Google Ads account setting that adds a GCLID, the Google click ID, to the URL every time someone clicks your ad. Your call tracking software uses that ID for attribution, tracing a lead back to its click, keyword and ad groups.
  3. WhatConverts tracking on your site, using dynamic number insertion to swap in one of its forwarding numbers for visitors who came from paid search. Every landing page needs the script.
  4. A WhatConverts tracking number on your call asset, with Google’s call reporting turned on so the ad shows a Google forwarding number. Those calls show up with the source “Google Call Extension.” Without it, the call half has nothing to match.
  5. Someone who judges every lead. A person, rules or both. More on that in the last section.

How Do You Connect WhatConverts to Google Ads?

It’s one connection in WhatConverts, one permission screen at Google, and a form with eight questions. Here’s the step-by-step to set up conversion tracking.

Whatconverts integrations page with the google ads card in the most popular list

Tracking, Integrations, with the Google Ads card

  1. In WhatConverts, open your profile, then Tracking, Integrations, Google Ads.
  2. Click Add Connection, sign in to Google with the admin login, and grant the permission.
  3. Where should we send conversions? Pick the Customer (your Google Ads login, or your agency’s manager account if it runs your ads) and the Account. Type both names: this is where you create a conversion action for each half. Skip it and WhatConverts names the first one “Leads (123456),” after your profile ID.

Question 1, account fields blurred

  1. How many conversions to count per click? Choose One. The form itself marks it as the pick for leads.
  2. What clicks should we use? We run First Click with a 90 day lookback.
Whatconverts google ads connection form, questions 2 and 3: one conversion per click and first click with a 90 day lookback selected

Questions 2 and 3

  1. When should we trigger sending conversions? Choose Set As Quotable Lead. The next section explains why.
Whatconverts google ads connection form, question 4: set as quotable lead selected as the trigger

Question 4

  1. Which value should be used? Quote Value or Sales Value. The dollar value section below covers which.
  2. Update existing conversions when the value changes? Yes. One catch the form spells out: call conversions can’t be updated after they’re sent.
Whatconverts google ads connection form, questions 5 and 6: conversion value and whether to update existing conversions

Questions 5 and 6

  1. What lead types trigger these conversions? Check every way you take leads. Leave the “send calls longer than” box at 0, because the quotable mark does the judging, not a minimum call duration.
Whatconverts google ads connection form, question 7: every lead type checked and calls longer than 0 seconds

Question 7

  1. Send leads as enhanced conversions? Turn on enhanced conversions for leads in your Google Ads account settings first, because WhatConverts can’t switch it on until you do. On a first connection, skip this question and finish. Then come back through Edit Connection, choose Yes and click Update Connection.

Question 8

Then go to Google Ads and leave both new conversion actions set to secondary for now. The primary or secondary section says when to switch.

Don’t rename them in Google Ads. WhatConverts’ help pages warn against it, and one says the uploads stop with nothing telling you. Change a name only through Edit Connection in WhatConverts.

Which Leads Should WhatConverts Send to Google?

Only the ones your team marked quotable.

The form gives four triggers. New Lead Received sends every lead, and Sales Value Received or Added sends leads once they carry a sale. Set As Quotable Lead sends the ones you marked as real, and Lead Intelligence Rules, on top plans, sends the ones that pass rules you write.

Send every new lead and spam, wrong numbers and robocalls all reach Google as wins, and Google goes looking for more of them. Quotable means only real people asking for work you do. How a lead earns that mark is in What Counts as a Qualified Call?

Mark leads fast. On another account we manage, qualified leads reached Google 0 to 3 days after the click. Wait too long and you lose them: a lead marked after the conversion’s click window closes, 60 days on the first account, can never upload.

Should Each Lead Carry a Dollar Value?

Only when the number is real, meaning a quote you gave or a sale you closed.

The form offers two values. Quote Value is the estimate, entered when the lead asks for a price. Sales Value is the final price, typed in or pulled from your CRM once the job’s done.

With a value attached, Google can bid for revenue and report return on ad spend instead of a lead count. One account we run quotes on the phone, so it sends Quote Value; another closes in a CRM, so it sends Sales Value. A made up average teaches Google nothing true.

Should the WhatConverts Conversions Be Primary or Secondary?

Primary, both halves together, once the account has 30 qualified leads or 90 days behind it.

A primary conversion action is one Google bids on, and a secondary one is only reported. A new account bids on all calls and forms at first, because Google needs conversion data to learn. At 30 qualified leads or 90 days, whichever comes first, both halves go primary and the raw call and form actions drop to secondary.

Keep one primary action per kind of lead, counted once per click. And set the two halves the same way, every time.

Heads up: never set one half to secondary on its own. A September cleanup on one account we manage did that to the call half because it looked like a duplicate, and Google counted 0 conversions in 19 days while the account spent $1,764 on Google Ads. That’s ad spend, not the WhatConverts bill. Setting it back took five minutes.

The fix: at 30 qualified leads or 90 days, switch both WhatConverts actions to primary in the same sitting. Then move the raw call and form actions to secondary.

How Do You Know the Tracking Is Working?

Test the number swap with a fake ad click, then watch your first real quotable leads land in Google Ads within 48 hours of sending.

Untested wiring. You don’t know what’s hot until you check. Here’s the check:

  • Load your site in a private window from a URL ending in ?gclid=test and confirm the phone number swaps. On one client site the swap took 2 to 10 seconds after the page loaded, so wait before you decide it failed.
  • Call the number that swapped in, then find the call in WhatConverts with google as the source and cpc as the medium. A test click ID can’t upload to Google, so this checks the tracking, not the upload.
  • In WhatConverts, every lead shows a Google Ads status. Pending means Google is making it wait 6 hours, Error means it failed (hover for the reason) and Blank means no trigger fired.
  • WhatConverts says a direct upload can take up to 48 hours to show in Google Ads. Compare by conversion time, not click time, or the days won’t line up.
  • Once a month, compare quotable leads in WhatConverts with conversions in Google Ads. If they drift apart, the next section has the reasons.

What Breaks Google Ads Call Conversion Tracking?

Five things, and on one account we manage three of them kept 11 of 18 qualified leads from ever reaching Google.

What breaksWhat you seeThe fix
Ad calls that skip the Google forwarding number“Call can’t be found” (7 of 14 qualified ad calls)A WhatConverts number on the call asset with call reporting on, plus the Business Profile check below
Login or permission mismatchPermission error (2 leads in one month)Reconnect with the account’s admin login
Quotable leads that never sentNo upload attempt (2 calls)Check the integration’s status column monthly
iPhone clicks from the Google appNo GCLID stored, so the upload can’t runTurn on enhanced conversions for leads
A conversion renamed in Google AdsUploads can stop with no warningRename only in WhatConverts

The iPhone row needs a word. Clicks from the Google app on an iPhone often carry a different ID, called a gbraid, instead of a GCLID. A lead that arrives with only a gbraid can’t go back as a click conversion, even when it’s marked quotable.

Two more don’t show up as errors. A tracking number can’t receive texts, so if your site says “text us a photo,” set that number not to swap. On one client site it swapped, and texts went nowhere.

And don’t count the same lead twice through Google Tag Manager, a Google Analytics conversion import and your call tracking. Pick one path per lead type.

Does Your Google Business Profile Number Skip the Tracking?

It can. In September 2026, Google confirmed that some local ad formats show your Business Profile number instead of the number on your ad.

It happens when a campaign carries both location assets (the setting that pulls your Business Profile into the ad) and a call asset (the phone number you chose). Google said those ads “may direct calls to the phone numbers associated with those locations,” even when the ad number was set in the Profile’s advanced settings.

Some advertisers have since seen the right number come back, but Google hasn’t said the change is reversed. If your Profile shows your main line, those calls skip your tracking entirely.

Two fixes. Make the Profile’s number a tracking number that forwards to your main line, or unlink the location asset from campaigns where it adds little.

Do You Still Need Enhanced Conversions for Leads?

Yes. Turn it on, because it gives Google a second way to match a lead when the click ID is missing.

With enhanced conversions for leads, WhatConverts sends the lead’s phone number or email, hashed so it can’t be read, and Google matches it against signed-in Google accounts that engaged with your ad. The form says it sends every lead with a phone or email, even ones with no click ID. Google Ads Help recommends it over a plain offline conversion import.

Turning it on means confirming you have your visitors’ consent under Google’s customer data policies, so check that your privacy notice covers it first. And since April 2026, enhanced conversions for web and for leads share one on/off setting in Google Ads.

It won’t recover every iPhone lead. It gives them a chance they didn’t have.

One more: since June 15, 2026, Google takes these uploads through its Data Manager API, and the upload runs on WhatConverts’ side. If conversions suddenly stop arriving, check the integration’s status column first.

Does Where You Advertise Change the Setup?

No. The setup works the same in every market, but when Local Services moves into Google Ads depends on your business type and country.

WhoWhen Local Services moves into Google Ads
US home and storefront services, such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing and pest controlFirst phase, from August 2026
US service-area businesses without a storefront, and accounts with custom bidding or bookingLate 2026
Accounts outside the US, and every category not moved in 20262027

After the move, Local Services runs as a Performance Max campaign with pay-per-lead goals. The old Local Services reports don’t carry over, though your lead history does, so download the reports before your date.

When Is WhatConverts the Wrong Pick?

When nobody, person or software, will judge your leads, or your account is too small for Google to learn from what you send.

Nobody judges the leads. The quotable mark is what sends a lead to Google. If no one sets it, Google gets nothing, and you’re paying for tracking with no signal.

The judge doesn’t have to be a person every time. Rules on top plans, or AI review, can do the first pass once there’s enough call data to learn what a good lead sounds like in your business. A short call that ends with “text me a picture of it” is a good lead, and a rule built on call length would throw it out.

We still review by hand on every account because we want the control. Every team should keep a person checking, even when software does the first pass.

Very low volume. Even with every fix, one account we manage could get 2 to 3 qualified leads a month matched in Google, too few for smart bidding to learn from. It still does its job there for Google Ads call tracking reports and judging calls, but don’t buy it expecting the bidding to get smarter.

Local Services Ads only: maybe more than you need. Local Services already records your calls and gives you the call details, and we mark those leads as real or not inside it by hand. WhatConverts can track Local Services too, and whether that’s worth it comes down to how much lead history you want in one place you control.

Is Your Tracking Ready?

Answer each of these with a yes or a number.

  1. Is auto-tagging on in your Google Ads account?
  2. Is the number on your call asset a WhatConverts number, with a Google forwarding number showing on the ad?
  3. Is your Business Profile number a tracking number, or is the location asset unlinked?
  4. Is the trigger Set As Quotable Lead, counting one conversion per click?
  5. Do both halves go primary together at 30 qualified leads or 90 days?
  6. How far apart are quotable leads in WhatConverts and conversions in Google Ads this month?

Google can’t bid on a call it never heard about.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your ads will run without Google Ads conversion tracking, but automated bidding then guesses at what a good result looks like, and you can’t tell a keyword that brings real calls from one that only spends. For a business that lives on the phone, call tracking is the part that shows which ads are driving real phone calls.

Usually timing or an unmarked lead. Google makes a new lead wait 6 hours before it can be sent, and a direct upload can take up to 48 hours to show, while leads nobody marked quotable never send. An Error status in WhatConverts means the upload failed, and a conversion renamed inside Google Ads can stop receiving uploads.

Yes, once your CRM is connected and the sale comes back as a value. Until then, quotable is the honest count: a real person asking for work you do. We only call something a booked job when the CRM confirms it, and here’s how we decide which calls count: What Counts as a Qualified Call?

No. Each lead goes back as a click conversion or a call conversion, never both, so the two actions don’t overlap. Double counting comes from running the Google tag or a Google Analytics import on the same leads as your call tracking, so pick one path for each kind of lead and set the others to secondary.

Not always. Local Services records your calls and gives you the lead details, and you should still mark which leads were real inside it, as we do. Add call tracking if you want the whole history kept in one place you control, especially now that Local Services is moving into Google Ads.

Find out how many of your leads Google never saw. We’ll compare your call log with what your Google Ads account counts, and show you the gap.
